Active cases down, Incidence rate down, R rate down… are restrictions taking effect?

February has got off to a good start as far as the epidemiological data is concerned for the Canary Islands as a whole. Active cases have dropped to 7,453 the incidence rate over 7 days (IA7) has dropped to 79.22, the R rate is 0.89 and 70,794 vaccines have been administered since the campaign began.

Individually some islands are doing better than others, as highlighted by the Ministry of Health in today’s data, which shows that 264 new cases of coronavirus have been detected, 139 in Gran Canaria, 59 in Lanzarote, 44 in Tenerife, 10 in La Palma, 7 in El Hierro, and just 5 in Fuerteventura.

El Hierro has now overtaken Lanzarote as the island with the highest IA7 of 255.29 compared to 252.81, but when you take into account that relates to 28 cases against a population of 10,968 people in El Hierro, and 385 cases last week against a population of 152,289 people in Lanzarote, it is easy to see that the problem is worse in the latter.

In fact, Lanzarote now has another problem as the hospital Dr. José Molina Orosa in Arrecife has now exceeded the limit of the availability of ICU units in the hospital. As we reported last week, extra beds were made available in a warehouse adjoining the unit as well as some in other departments, but from the graph below the situation is evident.

Active cases down, Incidence rate down, R rate down… are restrictions taking effect?Another positive is the number of medical discharges of people that have come to the end of their two week isolation after being in contact with someone who has tested positive, or have recovered and now tested negative for the virus. This number has consistently been above 400 daily recently and has contributed to Tenerife’s big drop in active cases in all areas of the island.
