The president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Pedro Martín, has visited the areas affected by the fire last summer in the municipalities of Los Realejos, San Juan de la Rambla, La Guancha and Icod, in which they are investing 4.4 million euros in work to restore the forestation of the slopes and clear the ravines.
"The Cabildo has launched several actions in which more than 10 local companies are participating and in which 112 people are working, carrying out a first intervention on 40 hectares of the more than 2,700 affected by the fire," he explained.
“Shortly after the fire last summer, we began to work on a project to recover the tracks that lead to the areas of the fire, improve the firebreaks, and repopulate the area with new vegetation that is more resistant to fires, in addition to the installation of dynamic barriers of protection”, he added.
The works, which will continue until the middle of next year, will improve all the space that burned at the time, to produce an area that is repopulated with new vitality. Some of the areas are inaccessible to the work teams due to the topography of the terrain, which is why other systems will be implemented, such as the dispersal of seeds using drones.
In addition to this sector 4, work is being done as a priority in another seven, which add up to a surface area of 195 hectares.
Isabel García added, "The Cabildo has reacted urgently to the serious problem that the fire caused once it was extinguished. The complicated landscape threatened the safety of people and, therefore, we have launched several actions that are already coming to fruition, although it is a long job and will take several years, due to the extent of the burnt mountain.”
At the same time, and inside the perimeter of the fire, the Cabildo is working on the restoration of more than 40 kilometres of three forest roads, which, due to the passage of firefighting vehicles, were badly affected. To do this, a machine is being used crushes stones up to 30 centimetres in diameter and then reuses them to generate a new track.
