The National Police have arrested a woman in the south of Tenerife who is accused of acting fraudulently as an estate agent and scamming 4,650 euros from a client who wanted to rent a property on the island.
The investigation began as a result of a denuncia (official complaint to the police) from a citizen who saw a property online that she was interested in renting in the south of the island, and the woman allegedly ‘bombarded’ her with various homes that might be of interest until she got a positive response.
To complete the rental, the detainee requested the payment by transfer of one month deposit (1,550 euros), one month's rent (1,550 euros), and another 1,550 euros as her ‘management fee’ for finding and contracting the property.
However, as soon as the money had been transferred, the woman acting as the agent disappeared and was completely uncontactable, by not answering the phone, messages, or emails.
Given these circumstances, the victim filed a complaint to the police and they opened an investigation. Given the details they had for the woman, including copies of emails and WhatsApp messages, the National Police located, identified and arrested her quickly.
She is now being investigated for other rental scams she may have committed and is being charged so that the victim can get her money back as soon as possible.
