There were disruptions at Tenerife South Airport yesterday (Sunday), resulting in the diversion of several flights due to adverse weather conditions. According to AENA, three flights arriving from Helsinki, Liverpool, and London-Gatwick werre redirected to Gran Canaria Airport
The disruptions were caused by wind shear, a sudden change in wind speed or direction during an aircraft’s descent, making it unsafe for some planes to land. Air traffic controllers have confirmed that several crews aborted their initial landing attempts and chose to divert for safety reasons.
AENA, the Spanish airport authority, has advised all passengers to check with their airline for the latest information on their flight status.
These flight diversions come amid a wider spell of severe weather affecting the Canary Islands. A pre-alert for high winds and coastal phenomena remains in effect, as issued by the Canary Islands Government’s Directorate General for Emergencies under the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, continues to maintain yellow weather warnings for strong winds across exposed areas and mountain regions in Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and Tenerife. Wind gusts in these areas are expected to reach speeds of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour.
