AEMET has activated yellow weather warnings across all of the Canary Islands this week, as an Atlantic storm system moves in north of the archipelago. Originally affecting just a couple of islands, the alerts have now been widened to cover the entire region, with strong winds added to earlier warnings for rough seas.
Across the islands, including Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, coastal areas are expected to see waves of 4 to 5 metres, particularly from Wednesday onwards.
At the same time, yellow warnings for wind will come into force on Thursday across all islands, with gusts of up to 70km/h forecast in many areas, especially in higher ground and exposed coastal zones.
Island-by-Island Impact:
- Tenerife & Gran Canaria: Strong waves will affect most coastlines on Wednesday, followed by gusty winds across northern areas, mountain regions and exposed slopes on Thursday.
- Lanzarote & Fuerteventura: Both islands will see rough seas on Wednesday, with strong winds expected island-wide on Thursday.
- La Palma, La Gomera & El Hierro: Rough seas will begin earlier, from Tuesday evening in some areas, before returning again on Thursday. Wind warnings will also affect large parts, or all, of these islands.
Storm System Behind the Change
The unsettled conditions are being caused by a low-pressure system moving through the Atlantic, just north of the islands. Forecasters warn that conditions could still change, as weather alerts are typically issued up to 48 hours in advance and may be extended.
Residents and visitors are advised to take care along coastal areas and in exposed locations, particularly as wind and wave conditions worsen later in the week.
