Around 200 passengers were left stranded at Fuerteventura Airport for more than 20 hours on Friday after a Ryanair flight was cancelled, with travellers including young children, babies, elderly passengers and a pregnant woman forced to spend the night inside the terminal.
The disruption has sparked complaints from passengers, who say they received little support from the low-cost airline while waiting for alternative travel arrangements.
According to reports, those affected were left sleeping in the airport after the flight was cancelled, with many claiming they were given just a €4 food voucher despite facing a lengthy delay.
Passengers described the amount as wholly inadequate, arguing that it fell far short of covering the cost of meals and refreshments during an extended wait that stretched well beyond 20 hours.
Several travellers also alleged that they were told to arrange their own accommodation rather than being provided with a hotel by the airline.
Among those affected were families travelling with babies, older passengers and a pregnant woman, raising concerns about the welfare of vulnerable travellers during the disruption.
The incident has attracted national attention after being highlighted by Antena 3 television, with frustrated passengers speaking out about the conditions they faced while waiting for information about their flight to Madrid.
Under European air passenger rights regulations, airlines are generally required to provide care and assistance, including meals, refreshments and, where necessary, accommodation, when passengers face long delays or cancellations. Compensation rights may also apply depending on the circumstances surrounding the disruption.
The incident comes at the start of the busy summer travel season, when thousands of holidaymakers are passing through Canary Islands airports every day, making flight disruptions particularly challenging for both tourists and residents.
Passengers affected by flight cancellations are advised to retain receipts, travel documents and any correspondence with the airline should they wish to pursue reimbursement or compensation claims.
