Cyclists in the Canary Islands now have a new way to get on two wheels without the upfront cost of buying a bike, as Decathlon has introduced its bicycle subscription service across the archipelago.

The scheme, already available in much of mainland Spain, allows customers to rent a bike for as little as €17.99 per month, offering a flexible alternative to ownership.

The service is now available at five Decathlon stores in the Canary Islands:

• La Laguna (Tenerife)
• Adeje (Tenerife)
• Telde (Gran Canaria)
• Tamaraceite (Gran Canaria)
• Arrecife (Lanzarote)

Rent for three or 12 months

Rather than purchasing a bike outright, customers can subscribe for either three or 12 months, depending on how long they expect to use it.

The option is aimed at people who want to try a particular type of cycling, need a bike for a limited period, or simply aren't ready to commit to buying one.

It could prove especially popular in the Canary Islands, where the mild climate makes cycling possible for much of the year, but where many residents and visitors may lack the space to store a bike or prefer to avoid the high initial cost of premium models.

Bikes for every rider

The subscription covers a wide range of bicycles, including:

• Road bikes
• Mountain bikes
• Gravel bikes
• City bikes
• Electric bikes
• Junior bikes

This makes the service suitable for commuters, leisure cyclists, fitness enthusiasts and families alike.

Prices from €17.99 a month

Subscription prices start from €17.99 per month for adult bikes and €6.99 per month for junior models, although the final cost depends on the bike selected, the rental period and availability at each store.

Unlike buying a bike, customers simply return it when their subscription ends, avoiding the long-term commitment and large one-off expense.

Maintenance and insurance included

One of the biggest advantages of the subscription is that maintenance is included.

According to Decathlon, every rental bike is inspected, repaired and serviced by technicians before being made available again. Customers also receive a scheduled service after six months to check key components such as brakes, gears, tyres, suspension and, for electric bikes, the battery.

The subscription also includes cover for accidents, theft and robbery, offering extra peace of mind for regular riders.

A growing trend towards flexible ownership

The launch forms part of Decathlon's wider strategy to promote more sustainable and flexible ways of accessing sports equipment.

Alongside its bike subscription service, the retailer already offers its Second Life programme for buying and selling pre-owned sports equipment, as well as repair workshops and rental services for water sports equipment at selected coastal stores.

By allowing products to be reused by multiple customers after professional servicing, the company hopes to extend the lifespan of its equipment while reducing unnecessary purchases.

With year-round cycling weather and routes ranging from coastal roads to mountain climbs, the Canary Islands are well placed to benefit from the new service, giving both residents and visitors a simple, affordable way to enjoy cycling without the commitment of buying a bike.
