It’s been five years since the last Tenerife Comedy Club at Karting Las Americas in Costa Adeje, but stand-up comedy with big name comedians is coming back to the island next Saturday, 20th January, with Live At The Auditorium.
Over the years some amazing comedians performed at Tenerife Comedy Club who went on to become household names, including Katherine Ryan, Joe Lycett, James Acaster, Seann Walsh, Nathon Caton, and Rob Deering to name but a few, but whatever the line-up and whether the audience had heard of them or not, they delivered and everyone had a fantastic night.
Next Saturday will be no different as it marks the ‘revamp’ of the Comedy Club by Oasis Fm with the first of a new series of comedy nights at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos, starring Troy Hawke, Mark Nelson, and Elliot Steel.
Like many aspects of entertainment, comedy has changed and comedians are now attracting bigger audiences in bigger venues, with the top ones performing up to 20,000 people in arenas. For this reason, the new comedy nights will be at an auditorium to give more of a theatre feel than a comedy club, and run along the same format as Live At the Apollo on the BBC with three comedians on each event.
Troy Hawke is an internet sensation, although he has been doing stand-up comedy for over 15 years, and did actually perform at Tenerife Comedy Club, but under a different guise called Philberto!
When he decided to create Troy Hawke, he established the character on the comedy circuit first, then moved into videos on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook amassing over two million followers across the platforms with the Greeters Guild welcoming people to shops, events, petrol stations, anywhere.
Now, everything he does goes viral and he is booked by brands to promote their products, and to appear at large events including Formula 1, PGA Golf, Premier League Football, and more recently, the WDC Darts Championship.
At the same time, he is touring with his stand-up show, having just been to America and Australia, and starts a UK tour in February, plus he appeared on Live At The Apollo on BBC2 over Christmas.
Mark Nelson started won the inaugural Scottish Comedian of the Year Award in 2006, barely a year after his first-ever open-spot, his mix of dark humour, cutting observations and superb one-liners has seen him firmly established as one of the UK’s biggest-hitting comedy powerhouses.
With a likeable manner on stage belying some of the stronger content, Nelson often has audiences laughing at things they know they really shouldn’t be laughing at. A degree in Politics supports his brilliantly topical writing and, although his stand-up is certainly not for the easily offended, the material is intelligent, well-conceived and beautifully crafted, all supported by a very confident delivery.
Despite being in his twenties, Elliot Steel is already a veteran of the British comedy circuit. Starting at age 16, he has wowed audiences and impressed critics after sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, appearances at the Comedy Store in London, and on TV on Comedy Central.
He is fast becoming a voice for those in their mid-twenties with his dark but intelligent style, and is tipped as one to look out for in the future. Elliot is following in the family footsteps, as his father, Mark Steel, is a comedian and broadcaster who has appeared on TV panel shows for the last 20 years.
Oasis Fm is aiming to have three or four big comedy nights a year at the auditorium with some big-name acts already agreed to come to the island, so show your support and get your tickets now.
