Netflix has done it again, turning a little-known film into a national sensation. Bajo un Volcán, filmed in Tenerife and starring William Levy and Maggie Civantos, has climbed into the list of most-watched movies in Spain, after it went almost unnoticed in cinemas.

When it was first released, the movie drew just over 32,000 cinema-goers, according to Taquilla España. But streaming has given it a second life, helped by its dramatic Canary Islands setting and its mix of romance, action, and natural drama.

From flop to success
Directed by Martín Cuervo, Bajo un Volcán follows Mario, a military pilot played by Levy, who arrives on the island during a volcanic threat. There he meets Elena, a fiery volcanologist played by Civantos. Their initial clashes soon turn into a passionate partnership as they race against time to save the town of Garachico from disaster.

The film was shot across several stunning locations in northern Tenerife. “Filming there was spectacular, the scenery was breathtaking,” Levy said. The island’s landscapes and the chemistry between the two leads are among the film’s biggest draws.
Audiences have praised the on-screen connection between Levy and Civantos. “Maggie is incredibly talented, working with her was easy and fun,” Levy said, while Civantos described the shoot as “intense but enjoyable,” crediting Levy’s energy for keeping spirits high on set.

A story with a volcanic heart
Without relying on big special effects, the movie resonates with viewers by drawing inspiration from real-life events such as the 2021 La Palma volcanic eruption. It blends human emotion with the raw power of nature, a formula that has clearly struck a chord.

The success has been so strong that a sequel, Bajo un Fuego (“Under Fire”), is already in production. Levy will reprise his role, this time facing a massive wildfire elsewhere in the Canary Islands, and, of course, another love story.

Tenerife shines on screen
The unexpected triumph of Bajo un Volcán once again highlights the Canary Islands as a world-class filming location, known for its spectacular scenery and growing reputation among Spanish and international productions.

Netflix has managed to turn what was once a box office flop into a viral streaming success, and in doing so, has showcased the natural beauty and emotional depth of the Canaries to audiences around the world.
