In response to the adverse weather conditions and the heatwave that has hit the Canary Islands, the Tenerife Cabildo has announced significant preventive measures to safeguard the safety and well-being of the population and Teide National Park, by closing access to the public.
The Minister of Natural Environment and Emergencies for the Cabildo, Blanca Pérez, underlined the intense and prolonged nature of the adverse weather conditions facing the island. These precautionary measures coincide with numerous festive and leisure events that attract a large influx of people, including the Perseids meteor shower, and the pilgrimage to Candelaria on August 15th (Tuesday)
Pérez explained: “This year, for strict security reasons, it will not be possible to go to Teide to observe the Perseids. We cannot guarantee the safety of visitors in the event of an incident, and the possibility of traffic congestion would present a significant obstacle to any firefighting teams.”
Due to this, she called for the understanding of the public and emphasized the importance of following the official recommendations provided through authorized channels, and explained that only authorised vehicles will be allowed access.
Because of the heat, the Insular Emergency Plan (PEIN) has been activated at its Maximum Alert level, as announced by the insular Emergency Manager. This plan contemplates exceptional level 3 preventive measures to combat forest fires, which can be detailed through the official website of the Cabildo.
