The emergency services have confirmed that a 15-year-old boy died last night as a result of his injuries after he collided with a car whilst riding on an electric scooter.
The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon on Calle Punta de Teno in Santa Cruz, and the teenager was rushed to the Hospital de la Candelaria with serious injuries sustained in the collision.
Paramedics also treated the 36-year-old female driver of the car, who suffered an anxiety attack and was transferred to a medical centre for further treatment.
This is the first fatality in Tenerife due to an incident with an electric scooter, and was an accident waiting to happen. People are crying out for stricter legislation for use of these scooters and for police to enforce the rules that do exist.
Every day people are complaining that riders are on pavements, not wearing helmets, have headphones on, are weaving through people in pedestrian areas, going down roads the wrong way, or riding across pedestrian crossings, and very often these are young tourists with no idea of the traffic or roads here in Tenerife.
It begs the question, what needs to happen before the authorities do something?
