Storm Therese caused widespread disruption across Tenerife overnight, with strong winds, power cuts and emergency rescues reported across the island. Authorities deployed a major response involving more than 160 personnel as conditions worsened into Friday morning.

Hurricane-force winds reached 122 km/h in Izaña and close to 100 km/h in Arico, bringing down streetlights, road signs and other infrastructure. Emergency crews also dealt with flooding, water build-up and landslides as the storm intensified.

900 homes left without electricity

Hundreds of homes were left without electricity, with energy provider Endesa confirming outages affecting around 900 customers in south and east Tenerife. The worst-hit areas include Adeje, Guía de Isora and Fasnia, while smaller outages were also reported in parts of Gran Canaria.

Repair work has been delayed due to dangerous wind conditions, making it difficult for technicians to safely access infrastructure. Power is expected to be gradually restored by lunchtime today.

Emergency incidents across the island

Emergency services carried out several rescues overnight as conditions deteriorated. In Bocacangrejo, people were trapped by strong waves and had to be assisted to safety in the early hours, while in Santa Cruz two individuals were rescued after being caught by rising water beneath a bridge.

Temporary accommodation has been opened in several municipalities, including Adeje, Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz, for those displaced or in vulnerable situations.

Road disruption has also been significant, with the TF-134 towards Almáciga closed due to landslides. Falling rocks have been reported in the Anaga area, particularly around the El Bailadero tunnel, creating hazardous driving conditions.

Island authorities are urging both residents and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and remain cautious while the alert remains in place. With further unsettled weather expected, emergency services remain on high alert across Tenerife.
