The arrival of Storm Claudia will force changes in schools across the Canary Islands tomorrow, Wednesday, 12th November. The Department of Education has announced the suspension of classes and school meals in La Palma from 1:30pm, due to forecast heavy rain, strong winds and a risk of flooding.

The measure is coordinated with the Regional Directorate of Emergencies and Civil Protection as part of the government’s severe weather response.

From 3:00pm, all islands in the western province (Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma) will switch to remote teaching for the afternoon, meaning there will be no face-to-face lessons later in the day.

Schools are also advised to cancel complementary and extracurricular activities, including sports and trips, to avoid unnecessary travel during the most intense phase of the storm.

The decision follows upgraded warnings from AEMET, which expects persistent rainfall, locally heavy downpours, intense south-westerly gusts and rough seas, especially in the western islands. Authorities warn of potential sudden rises in ravines and localised flooding, urging the public to exercise caution and follow official channels only for updates.

Measures for Thursday (13th November) have not yet been finalised. Education officials will review the situation at 11:00am on Wednesday with Emergencies and Civil Protection, taking into account the storm’s actual evolution and the latest forecasts. Families and schools will be informed through the usual channels as soon as a decision is made.
