Residents of Adeje denounce construction of new car park by Puerto Colon

In August we published an article about the construction of a new five-floor underground car park in San Eugenio, in the south of Tenerife, and we received emails and messages from people against it who claim that it is not needed as there is ample parking in the area, and angry as it will destroy a park that is the only green land left in the area and home to several species of wildlife.

In their correspondence, they pointed out that "in 2006, the Adeje Council, headed by Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, had the intention of building a 5-storey car park in the only green area of Calle Colón”, which is the park in front of Club Atlántis, even though “there are other underused car parks close by in Puerto Colón, CC San Eugenio, and CC La Niña”.

They also pointed out that at the beginning of 2007 municipal personnel removed one of the palm trees from the park, that was replanted in the centre of Adeje which "dried up due to a lack of attention".

At that time a group of apartment owners and other locals sensitive to maintaining the only green space in the area, protested and delivered documents to the Town Hall, and managed to prevent the car park from being built, assuming that would be the end of it and a car park would never be built on the site.

However, in August the park was fenced off and signs informed of the pending construction of an underground car park, which has been passed by the Adeje Council. This is déjà vu for the locals who are still against it for the same reasons as they were 15 years ago.

This time, the project isn’t a council project, it is being carried out by Puerto Colon themselves. This time the group has made an official denuncia against the destruction of the park, which has been passed to the Adeje town hall, who have said: "there is an open file on this case, although the issue is still not clear," and that, "it is currently being evaluated by the legal team and they will resolve it in a few weeks."

This means there is currently no clear answer from the Council until it is evaluated, but what is a reality is that the park remains fenced off.
