The Tenerife Cabildo said yesterday, Thursday, that the American market has seen an influx of 26,084 travellers from January to September 2023, marking a substantial 35.1% increase compared to the same period last year, and double the number from 2019.
They said that the summer of 2023 alone witnessed the arrival of 9,913 American tourists, a remarkable 51.1% increase over the summer of 2022 and more than double the figures recorded in the summer of 2019.
Canadian tourism to the island has also experienced growth, with 3,972 visitors recorded in the first nine months of the year, reflecting a 39.4% increase compared to 2022 and a 55.5% rise from 2019.
While the presence of Canadian travellers in accommodations during the summer of 2023 decreased by 8.8% compared to the summer of 2022, it still showed a noteworthy 24.3% increase compared to the figures in 2019.
These statistics were revealed following Tenerife's participation in the annual congress of U.S. Tour Operators, USTOA, held in Los Angeles. Tenerife was the sole Canary Islands destination and one of the three Spanish representatives, alongside Madrid and Catalonia.
In a press release, the Cabildo celebrated its involvement in the event, where Tenerife engaged in more than fifty meetings with leading companies in the North American tourism industry, among the 700 attendees.
Vice President and Councillor of Tourism, Lope Afonso, emphasized the island's strong commitment to the North American market. He said that by enhancing promotional efforts at source, there is a potential to solidify this traveller profile during the winter season, accompanied by improvements in connectivity.
"I am confident that we can attract this potential visitor in the coming times, who values our significant range of offerings and is willing to spend considerably in the destination, thereby leaving more profitability in Tenerife," he added.
