The Los Cristianos port will experience its busiest time of year over the next couple of days with 22,750 people in 6,115 vehicles scheduled on 24 ferries in 48 hours, the same amount as the capacity of CD Tenerife’s football stadium, as Canaries residents look to get away for Easter.
The vast majority of passengers, 19,000 in total, will be leaving Tenerife to head for La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro in the next 24 hours, many to see family and friends, while 3,750 are scheduled to arrive from those islands to the south of Tenerife, according to the forecast of the Port Authorities.
Ferry companies, Fred Olsen and Armas, have scheduled 11 departures for today (Wednesday) and 13 for tomorrow (Thursday) from Los Cristianos, which are added to the first Easter holiday exodus, which took place last Friday and Saturday, when more than 7,300 passengers and 2,060 vehicles departed to the three western islands.
However, this does not mean that the roads in the south of Tenerife will be quiet, the Arona Council have informed that between today and Sunday, the volume of traffic will increase by 10,000 more cars in Los Cristianos and its surroundings, with an average of 2,000 extra vehicles per day, due to the arrival of tourists with hire cars and people coming down from the north of the island for the weekend.
The busiest day will be Sunday when the ferries bring those people back from La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro with occupancy levels higher than those of a normal weekend.
According to the data provided by the Port Authority, a total volume of more than 26,000 passengers and up to 5,000 vehicles are expected, to which must be added the usual freight trucks that cover the routes between the four western islands.
In order to avoid traffic jams both the Port Authority and the Council are reminding drivers who disembark that they have two exit routes to the TF-1 motorway: either through Los Cristianos or through Playa de Las Americas. For anyone else, probably best to avoid the port area at this time!
