Access roads to the Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote were once again brought to a standstill on Tuesday morning, as a surge of tourist traffic led to long queues stretching along the LZ-67.

Footage from the scene shows cars lined up from the park entrance, with some drivers losing patience.

One vehicle was seen turning around in the middle of the road after deciding not to wait, forcing other motorists to stop. In another incident, a car appeared to attempt driving against the flow of traffic, briefly adding to the congestion.

Lengthy queues at Timanfaya are common in the summer months, when visitor numbers to the island peak. Similar disruption was reported in July, when gridlocked traffic prompted the Guardia Civil to intervene and restore order.

A pilot scheme has been implemented, limiting entry to Timanfaya to just 30 cars every 15 minutes, aiming to regulate the flow of vehicles and avoid parking bottlenecks. Local officials agreed that future access should rely exclusively on collective transport, including shuttle services from Yaiza and Mancha Blanca, supported by an online reservation system with timed slots to ease road traffic, improve conservation outcomes, and provide a more seamless visitor experience.
