La Palma freezes as temperatures drop to -5.2°C

The cold weather is continuing in the Canary Islands, not only has there been snow in Gran Canaria and skiing policemen in Tenerife, but now La Palma has come to a frozen standstill as temperatures dropped to -5.2°C last night (Thursday).

The intense cold has painted a polar landscape at the top of La Palma, with the coldest point being at an altitude of 2,426 metres early this morning, according to data from the Meteorological station of the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT).

This icy temperature has frozen the area of Roque de Los Muchachos as an Isolated High Level Depression (DANA) left hail, ice, snow, and sleet on the summits of La Palma.

Since February 4th, there have been four snowfalls recorded on the island's summits and frosts have been almost daily since the beginning of 2023. The interior pathways of the scientific complex have remained closed to visitors for days due to sheet ice.
