It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Santa Cruz switches on the lights

Thousands packed the Plaza del Príncipe in Santa Cruz last night, as the city officially started Christmas in Tenerife by switching on the, energy saving, lights. The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, addressed the public and announced that this year, finally, the Three Wise Men will be coming for January 6th, much to the delight of the crowds.

The mayor and guest singer, Nia, who won Spain’s version of the X Factor in 2020, officially pressed the button and lit up the city centre which started a show in which the square in the Plaza del Príncipe was transformed into a “magic box” that housed the illusion of an act that featured an interpretation of the Christmas carol ‘Somewhere in my memory’ by John Williams.

Nia closed proceedings by singing the Christmas song ‘Farolito’, made popular by Gloria Estefan, and some of her own songs marking the start of Christmas.

This year the Santa Cruz council has spent 780,850 euros on decorating the city with 1,228 light decorations and arches, 51,830 metres of garlands, and 59 displays and structures.

Mayor Bermúdez finished by ensuring that the council is “maintaining their commitment to sustainability, not only in the use of the most efficient LED technology but also to when the lights will be on, as they will be switched off at 2am every night”, before wishing everyone a safe Christmas.
