Police in Tenerife have launched an investigation after human bones were discovered in a hard-to-reach area near the coast of Santa Cruz this morning (Wednesday).

The remains were found shortly before 9:00 am in a remote spot close to the coastal village of San Andrés, prompting a response from several emergency and security teams.

Firefighters from the Tenerife Consortium’s Tomé Cano station were called to the coastline to help reach the area and recover the remains. Officers from the National Police Homicide Unit, the Scientific Police and a forensic doctor also attended due to the nature of the discovery.

Early indications suggest the bones may belong to a human, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.

The remains will now be taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where specialists will try to identify the person and determine how and when they died. Investigators will also check whether the remains could be linked to anyone who has been reported missing.

A specialist rescue team from the Tenerife Fire Service helped move the bones from the difficult terrain so they could be examined by police and forensic experts.

The discovery comes less than two weeks after another skeleton was found in a coastal area of Santa Cruz. In that case, members of Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME) came across the remains while carrying out a training exercise near the access road to the capital by the refinery.

Police have not yet said whether the two discoveries could be connected, and the investigation is ongoing.
