Tejeda, in the mountains of Gran Canaria, recorded the highest temperature in the Canary Islands yesterday (Tuesday) as the ongoing heatwave pushed official temperatures recorded at weather stations close to 39°C.
According to Spain's State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), it reached 38.6°C shortly before 4:00pm, making Tejeda the hottest location in the archipelago.
The reading came as forecast, with much of the Canary Islands experiencing intense heat throughout the day. Tejeda had been placed under an orange weather warning for high temperatures on Tuesday and will remain under a yellow warning today (Wednesday), when temperatures are again expected to reach or exceed 34°C.
Gran Canaria and La Gomera Among the Hottest
The second-highest temperature was recorded at Las Tirajanas, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, where temperatures climbed to 37.7°C.
La Gomera also experienced exceptionally hot conditions. Arure, in the upper Valle Gran Rey area, reached 36.8°C, while Alto Igualero, in Vallehermoso, recorded 36.4°C.
Rounding out the five hottest locations was El Pinar, on El Hierro, where temperatures peaked at 36.3°C shortly after 1:00pm.
Strong Winds Add to Challenging Conditions
Alongside the high temperatures, strong winds affected several islands during the day, hence the forest fire warnings activated across the archipelago.
The strongest sustained winds were recorded at Suerte Alta, in Agaete on Gran Canaria, where speeds reached 70km/h, with gusts of up to 86km/h.
Elsewhere, gusts reached 78km/h in Pájara, Fuerteventura, while Fuencaliente on La Palma recorded winds of up to 74km/h.
With hot, dry and windy conditions continuing across parts of the Canary Islands, authorities are urging residents and visitors to take precautions, stay well hydrated and follow any advice issued during the ongoing period of extreme weather.
