Granadilla Council reopens beaches after getting back analysis results

The Granadilla City Council have reopened its beaches in the south of Tenerife, which were closed yesterday due to the presence of an unidentified deposit, suspected to be from human waste. The good news is that the samples have been tested and come back with positive news so they can be reopened but under a yellow flag which means that you must be careful when going in the water.

Granadilla decided to close its beaches as a precaution due to a deposit moving along the coast until its origin and nature were known. This meant that bathing anywhere on the coast of the municipality was prohibited and red flags were on all beaches and bathing areas.

However, the Granadilla Council were pleased to confirm that the test results point to the deposit being a ‘natural phenomenon’ that is also occurring in other parts of, not just Tenerife, but the Archipelago in general and is not a spill of human waste.

In a statement, they reported that the values of the E.Coli bacteria analysed are between 10 and 20 NMP per 100 ml, which is well below the maximum allowed level of 500 NMP per 100 ml, according to the national regulations that regulate bathing water quality.

Any value below 250 is classed as "excellent quality", so the levels of faecal contamination detected on the coast of Granadilla are so low that the quality of bathing water is excellent.

Regarding Arico, the Local Police have carried out an inspection of the area and have also decided to keep the yellow flag as a precaution in case the deposits are detected again at some point.
