Public transport across the Canary Islands will remain free for frequent users throughout 2026, after Spain’s Council of Ministers approved a full-year extension of the existing support measures on Tuesday.

The announcement confirms that both urban and interurban bus service, along with the Tenerife tram, will continue to be free for regular travellers next year. The national government has allocated 1.3 billion euros to fund the renewed package, according to the Minister for Transport, Óscar Puente.

A major new initiative, the “single travel pass”, will be launched in the second half of January. Costing 60 euros per month, reduced to 30 euros for those under 26, it will cover state-run interregional buses, local commuter trains, and medium-distance rail services. This measure was first highlighted by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in his annual review.

For 2026, several transport discounts have been renewed. On state-run bus routes, free travel remains in place for children up to 14. A 10-journey ticket will continue to include a 40% discount, and the monthly pass will stay at 50% off, rising to 70% for young people aged up to 26.

For regional and local public transport, the national government will again fund child travel for free, provide a 50% discount for users under 26, and apply a 20% reduction on all other travel passes. Crucially, the government will now finance these measures even if regional or local authorities choose not to add the additional 20%, they were previously required to co-fund.

Specific support for frequent travellers in the Canary Islands also remains unchanged, guaranteeing free terrestrial public transport for regular users.
