The Canary Islands government has officially announced that it will not be pursuing the construction of the Fonsalía port in Guía de Isora, in the south of Tenerife. This decision was revealed by the Minister of Public Works, Transport, and Housing, Pablo Rodríguez, who emphasized the unanimous position of the Executive in abandoning the Fonsalía project.
This decision will be welcomed by the thousands of people who were against it, however, while the Fonsalía port will not be included in the list of upcoming projects, Rodríguez highlighted the pressing need to address the severe congestion issues plaguing the Los Cristianos port. He described the current state of affairs as highly inefficient, leading to significant losses in terms of ships, cargo, and time.
"It is the unanimous position of the Executive," reiterated Minister Rodríguez, "although we must actively seek alternatives to enhance connectivity between Tenerife and the other western Islands."
Nueva Canarias representative, Esther González, expressed her satisfaction with the decision to forgo the Fonsalía project, which she considers "impossible, unnecessary, and a big mistake" given its lack of social, economic, and environmental justification.
Instead of pursuing the Fonsalía port, she has proposed utilizing the Granadilla de Abona port as a means to improve maritime connectivity from the south of Tenerife, as it is already there, big enough to cope, and only 10 minutes from the main areas of the south.
