Firefighters contain outbreak of forest fire in the south of Tenerife before it spreads

Brifor troops have controlled an outbreak of forest fire declared this afternoon (Sunday) in the El Roque area of San Miguel de Abona, as reported by the Tenerife Cabildo on Twitter.

Due to the fast actions and diligence of the firefighters, who are currently on high alert due to the Government warning for forest fires, it has only affected a small area of stubble and trees.

The emergency services received a call just after 5:00pm alerting them of the fire, and declared it controlled just after 6:00pm, which doesn’t mean it’s fully out, but it’s contained and they will continue to water the area to ensure it doesn’t reignite.

Fortunately, easy access and the lack of wind help them control the fire quickly and prevent it from spreading.

GOVERNMENT ALERT FOR FOREST FIRES:
The General Directorate of Security and Emergencies activated an alert for forest fires from 7:30am this morning on the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma.

The alert means that the use of fire is forbidden within a 400-metre perimeter of forests and risk areas, including barbeques, campsites, recreation areas, machinery that causes sparks, and smoking.
