FIRE UPDATE: 5 people injured, community pulls together to rescue animals

The emergency services have confirmed that five people have been treated for various ailments as a result of this afternoon's fire at a composting plant in Parque La Reina in the south of Tenerife, near to the TF-1 motorway.

Two of them have had to be taken to hospital, a man suffering from smoke inhalation and a firefighter with an eye injury, as reported by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).

Several teams of Tenerife Firefighters, the Canary Islands Emergency Services, and a GES helicopter dropping water from the air, have been helping with the extinguishing work, with the support of the Local Police and the Guardia Civil on the ground.

The fire has also forced the emergency evacuation of the Esperanza del Sur animal shelter, which has seen an extraordinary response from the Tenerife community of all nationalities. The charity organisation asked for anyone with a collar, lead, or harness, to come and help get the animals to safety, and people turned up in their droves to help.

The mayor of Arona, Fátima Lemes, sent a message to the people of Arona, urging them not to fret as all of the animals in the shelters will be safe, because all local council resources are at the disposal of the emergency services to help them.

Live PAWS Rescued Animals Tenerife have put a message on social media thanking everyone, but are asking for help as some dogs are missing that ran away in panic from the fire, and haven’t been found yet. If you have seen these dogs or have any information of others from Live PAWS or Esperanza del Sur, please contact them via social media.
