The long-awaited renovation of El Médano’s iconic wooden seafront walkway is entering its final phase, with Granadilla de Abona Town Hall confirming that the last stage of the project is expected to begin within the next month.
The refurbishment marks the culmination of a major improvement project aimed at restoring one of south Tenerife’s best-known coastal promenades after decades of wear and tear caused by constant exposure to the sea.
Ayuntamiento de Granadilla de Abona officially signed off the first two phases of the works this week, while the third and final section has now been awarded to contractors. The last stage is expected to take around two months to complete.
More than €700,000 invested
The project, funded through Spain’s Sustainable Tourism Plan, has already seen around €525,000 invested in the first two phases of the renovation. A further €172,000 will now be spent completing the final section of the upgrade.
The wooden promenade, originally built in 1992, had suffered years of gradual deterioration due to the harsh marine environment and heavy daily use from both residents and tourists.
Safety and accessibility improvements
The renovation works have included the replacement of damaged wooden flooring, improvements to street furniture, and upgrades designed to improve both safety and accessibility for pedestrians.
Local authorities say additional improvements are also planned in the future, including the modernisation of beach shower facilities.
The council also acknowledged the disruption caused during construction, particularly for nearby businesses and residents in one of Tenerife’s busiest beach areas.
Officials apologised for the inconvenience caused during the works and thanked local residents for their patience while the project was being carried out.
El Médano remains one of Tenerife’s most popular coastal destinations, especially among windsurfers, kitesurfers, and visitors looking for a more relaxed beach atmosphere away from the island’s larger tourist resorts.
