Canary Islands income by postcode: where are the highest and the lowest earners?

The latest income data from the Spanish Tax Agency for 2022, broken down by postcode, highlights the significant income disparities across the Canary Islands. The report focuses on four major cities with over 100,000 residents: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, and Telde.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

There were 191,645 tax declarations in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2022, with an average gross income of€30,383, and an average disposable income of €24,706. However, income varies widely across the various neighbourhoods of the city.

Triana, one of the most affluent neighbourhoods, reports a gross income of €46,759, significantly above the city’s average. The wealthiest area, Ciudad Jardín, boasts a much higher gross income of €60,679, despite having just 2,106 tax declarations. Other high-income neighbourhoods include Arenales (€41,791), Guanarteme (€34,520), and Santa Catalina (€34,442).

In contrast, lower-income areas like La Isleta have a gross income of €26,266, while areas such as Schamann and La Paterna report much lower figures, with €22,451 and €20,702, respectively.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the city registered 107,419 tax declarations, with a gross income average of €29,864 and a disposable income average of €24,374. The most affluent area is Ifara-Parque García Sanabria, where the gross income reaches €43,687, making it one of the wealthiest zones in the city. Close behind are San Vicente Ferrer-Plaza de España (€42,140) and Avenida Constitución-Palmetum (€41,078).

Meanwhile, areas like El Sobradillo-La Gallega-El Pilar report a much lower gross income of €23,317, underscoring the income disparity within the city.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna

San Cristóbal de La Laguna, with 77,745 tax declarations, has a gross income average of €27,117 and a disposable income of €22,382. The wealthiest area, Vega Lagunera (postal code 38208), has a gross income of €41,715, followed by Plaza del Adelantado-Catedral (€38,033).

In contrast, Guajara-El Cardonal reports one of the lowest incomes at €21,093, while mid-range neighbourhoods like Barrio Nuevo-Finca España (€28,033) and Tejina (€23,701) fall between the two extremes.

Telde

Telde, with 50,051 tax declarations, reports a gross income average of €25,523 and a disposable income of €21,309, slightly below Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s averages. The highest-income areas in Telde include La Garita-Hoya del Pozo-Marpequeña, with a gross income of €34,368, and Playa del Hombre-Taliarte-Salinetas-Playa de Melenara (€33,926).

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Jinámar emerges as one of the poorest areas in Telde, with an income of just €19,333, one of the lowest in the entire region.

Triana vs. Parque García Sanabria

Comparing incomes between the Triana neighbourhood in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Ifara-Parque García Sanabria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife reveals that residents in Triana earn more, with a gross income of €46,759, compared to €43,687 in Parque García Sanabria.

Despite the proximity of these two islands, the slight income difference highlights the economic variation between regions within the Canary Islands.

This data illustrates the stark contrasts in income levels emphasising the economic disparities that exist even within the same cities.
