Team GB sprinter, James Ellington, is suing teammate Nigel Levine for million pounds after a motorbike accident in Tenerife in 2017, left him with multiple fractures that he says, have ruined his career.
Ellington maintains that his career was "cut short" after he was destined for the top after competing in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. He also claims that he would have gone on to be a top-level TV commentator, but that has also been taken away from him.
According to the tests, Nigel Levine, who was driving the motorcycle they were both on, would have tested positive for drugs, being responsible for the accident. The two athletes were at a training camp in Tenerife, when the accident that "changed" Ellington's life happened.
Although he recovered from multiple leg fractures to post a remarkable 10.93 over 100m in 2019 and competed at the 2021 British Athletics Championships, Ellington insists he was never the same top-level sprinter that he had been before the accident.
His attorney Katherine Deal told the judge: "Mr. Ellington sustained numerous orthopaedic injuries in the accident, including, most importantly given his profession, multiple fractures to both lower legs and a fracture to his pelvis."
Ellington added: “I was at the peak of my career when the accident happened and I was running faster than ever. However, my life changed forever in Tenerife, in a split second. Now I want that to be compensated.”
The case continues awaiting a ruling by the judge.
