Swimming and bathing has been temporarily banned at El Cabezo Beach in El Medano, in the south of Tenerife, after routine water tests revealed elevated levels of enterococci bacteria above legal safety limits.

The local council ordered the precautionary closure on Tuesday to protect public health, restricting access to the sea until further notice.

According to municipal sources, the issue was detected during regular monitoring of bathing water quality. Enterococci are bacteria commonly used as an indicator of possible contamination, particularly from wastewater.

As a result, authorities have activated standard safety protocols, closing the beach to swimmers while additional testing is carried out.

Further tests underway

A counter-analysis has already been commissioned with a specialist laboratory to verify the initial findings.

The beach will remain closed until results confirm that water quality has returned to safe levels. Officials have stated that El Cabezo will reopen immediately once conditions meet health standards.

During the closure, both residents and visitors are being urged to follow instructions from lifeguards and beach safety teams on site.

Ongoing monitoring system

Local authorities stressed that such closures are part of routine public health controls along the coast of Granadilla de Abona, designed to ensure bathing waters comply with safety regulations.

For now, access to the water remains restricted as a precaution, pending updated test results expected in the coming days.
