Arona installs new technology to monitor beaches to make them safer

The Arona council have installed a new coastal management service with a biometric control system in real time, which allows measuring and anticipating issues such as the change of tides, waves or accumulation of sandbanks, and the influx of public, all with the aim of improving the management of the beaches in the municipality.

After the installation of webcams for the uninterrupted transmission of live images at Playa Honda, El Camisón, Las Vistas, and the Los Cristianos beaches, Arona is now committed to the implementation of innovative systems for the intelligent management of the coastline.

The technology is called KostaSystem and has been developed by a company called Azti. The system consists of the installation of cameras on the beaches of Las Vistas and Los Cristianos, which allow obtaining and capturing images and their spatial referencing.

It is designed to manage three main lines of action, such as safe swimming beach services, and morphological monitoring of changes to the beaches by sand. The technology makes it possible to establish patterns in the behaviour of currents and waves, which helps to guarantee the safety of bathers.

In addition, it also allows those responsible for coastal services to carry out monitoring and maintenance tasks in a more efficient way, because they can calculate the number and density of people that use the beaches, identify erosion zones, surface variations, and accumulations of sand, in addition to monitoring the environmental impact and the regeneration of the beaches.
