A 36-year-old woman gave birth yesterday morning (Monday), in an ambulance on the way to the HUC hospital whilst being transferred from the Hospital del Norte where she had been for a check-up.
The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) received a call at 7:00am yesterday morning from the ambulance informing them that they were on their way to the Hospital Universitario de Canarias when the woman went into labour by La Orotava.
Due to this, and how far they were from the HUC, the ambulance driver pulled over onto the hard shoulder of the TF-5 motorway, and the crew decided they had no choice but to deliver her baby there and then in the ambulance.
CECOES sent the Guardia Civil to the area who surrounded the ambulance and closed one lane of the TF-5 to give a safe distance around the vehicle whilst the baby was being delivered.
Not long after, the ambulance crew were happy to report that they had successfully delivered a baby girl and that both the mother and her newborn daughter were safe and healthy.
The police then escorted the ambulance to the HUC hospital where both were admitted for routine observation following the birth.
