The Pisces VI submarine will explore the lava deltas generated by the eruption of Cumbre Vieja, in La Palma in February, diving up to 300 metres deep, as part of the Vulcana III scientific project of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO).
The submarine has the ability to take three people to depths of two kilometres in the sea and has just undergone a refit in Kansas (US) before arriving here in the Canary Islands.
It is going to be used to study the impact of volcanic activity on the marine environment around La Palma, and the project is being directed by oceanographer, Eugenio Fraile.
Being able to go to these depths will allow scientists more thorough and direct observation and filming of the deltas caused by the lava flows, as well as the more selective acquisition of samples with robotic arms.
There will be an open house on February 19th in the port of Tazacorte, where people interested in the project can visit the Pisces VI Submarine.
