The National Geographic Institute (IGN) registered a seismic swarm on the west coast of Tenerife in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday) between 1:00am to 6:00am, with at least 16 low-magnitude earthquakes.
The earthquakes were recorded at a depth of between 40 and 50 kilometres and have had a maximum magnitude of 1.6 on the Richter scale.
The IGN have reported that they are continuing to analyze this series, but clarifies that due to its small magnitude and great depth, none were felt by the public.
In addition, they have specified that these earthquakes do not mean, in principle, any change in the state of volcanic activity in Tenerife, due to their depth and size.
The Canary Islands Volcano Institute (INVOLCAN) has also reported that the Canary Islands Seismic Network has registered a small seismic swarm of around 20 low-magnitude earthquakes. They have reported that 17 of these were in the area of Santiago del Teide at depths of 40 kilometres and with a maximum magnitude of 1.5 on the Richter scale.
