A 72-year-old woman was rescued on Wednesday morning after becoming trapped in deep mud at the Charco de San Ginés lagoon in Arrecife, Lanzarote.

Emergency services were called at around 11:00am after a passer-by alerted the Canary Islands emergency coordination centre that a woman was stuck in the lagoon.

Local Police officers, firefighters, emergency volunteers and medical personnel responded quickly and found the woman conscious and alert, but unable to free herself.

According to emergency services, she had entered the lagoon from a bridge near Bar Ginorys and walked several metres into the marsh area. However, with the tide at a low level, she became stuck knee-deep in thick mud and was unable to move.

Firefighters successfully freed the woman and evacuated her from the opposite side of the lagoon, near the roundabout at the entrance to Marina Arrecife.

Paramedics immediately carried out an initial medical assessment. Although she had no visible injuries, she complained of lower back pain and discomfort in her legs after being trapped in the mud.

After being stabilised, she was taken to the Emergency Department at Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital for further medical evaluation.
