A five-year-old girl is in a serious condition after a near-drowning incident in the swimming pool of a holiday complex in Pájara, Fuerteventura, according to the Canary Islands’ Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The incident occurred at around 1.20pm yesterday afternoon (Thursday) at a hotel on Avenida de Gran Canaria in Jandía. Emergency services were alerted after the on-duty lifeguard pulled the child from the water in cardiac arrest, showing clear signs of drowning from the amount of water she had swallowed.

Before paramedics arrived, the lifeguard immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). When medical personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) reached the scene, they continued the resuscitation efforts and successfully managed to restore the girl’s heartbeat.

Once stabilised, she was transferred by advanced life support ambulance to Fuerteventura General Hospital, where a medical helicopter was waiting to airlift her to the Canary Islands University Maternal and Children’s Hospital in Gran Canaria for specialised care.

Water Safety Tips for Families in the Canary Islands

Enjoying the pool or beach? Keep it fun — and safe — with these reminders:

  • Always supervise children – Even in shallow water, never leave them unattended.
  • Stay within arm’s reach – Especially for young or inexperienced swimmers.
  • Watch for signs of tiredness – Encourage regular rest and hydration breaks.
  • Follow lifeguard instructions – They know the local conditions best.
  • Teach children basic water safety – Such as floating on their back and calling for help.
  • Learn CPR – Quick action can save lives in emergencies.

The Canary Islands’ beaches and pools are some of the safest in Europe, but vigilance is key — especially for families on holiday.
