A five-year-old child is in a critical condition after a drowning incident in a hotel swimming pool in Yaiza, Lanzarote, yesterday (Thursday).

The child was pulled from the water in cardiorespiratory arrest, prompting an immediate emergency response from people at the scene, including the hotel's lifeguard and a doctor, who began CPR while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

The Canary Islands emergency coordination centre, CECOES, received the 112 alert at 12:45pm and immediately dispatched several emergency resources to the hotel.

These included two ambulances from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), one of them a medically equipped ambulance and the other providing basic life support, as well as a medical helicopter, which landed as close to the hotel as possible to enable the emergency evacuation to take place as quickly as possible.

Child's pulse restored after advanced CPR

When the SUC medical teams arrived, the five-year-old remained in cardiorespiratory arrest. Paramedics continued with advanced resuscitation procedures and successfully restored the child's pulse.

Once stabilised sufficiently for transfer, the child was taken by helicopter in a critical condition to the Maternal and Child University Hospital of Gran Canaria for specialist treatment.

No further information regarding the child's condition has been released at this stage.
