A total of 22 people out of the 58 who arrived by boat in Granadilla in the south of Tenerife yesterday afternoon (Sunday), were taken to different hospitals and medical centres in the area to be treated for dehydration and other heat-related injuries and illnesses after their crossing from West Africa.
One of these people had to be taken to the Hospital de La Candelaria in serious condition after going into cardiorespiratory arrest and being revived by the emergency services who saved his life.
Earlier today (Monday), a pneumatic boat with 53 people on board was intercepted off the coast of Fuerteventura. The Sasemar 101 seaplane located the vessel around 10:00am, some 40 miles from Gran Tarajal on the southeast of the island.
The Salvamar Izar rescue boat was dispatched to coordinates given by the plane, and the Maersk Congo cargo ship was requested to stay close to the small pneumatic until they arrived so that they could reach them safely.
The Maritime Rescue boat met the boat just after midday today and rescued the 47 men and six women of sub-Saharan and North African origin, taking them to the port of Gran Tarajal, where it arrived at 1:45pm.
