The mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, has requested to the Government of the Canary Islands that in islands that are at level 1, restrictions on capacity and closing times in the business and hospitality sectors be eliminated. Bermúdez says that the epidemiological data and the trend of infections "are very positive in recent weeks, and it is time to start eliminating these restrictions and return to normal."
Bermúdez added that "Tenerife should be at level 1 since last Thursday, because that is what the epidemiological reports indicate", even though the Public Health Committee explained that indicators were only in Level 1 territory for 10 days and not the full 14 days required for a reduction in the alert level, the same reason as to why Gran Canaria didn’t move to Level 1 on September 23rd.
The mayor stated that “it does not make sense that, while the capacity of Football stadiums across Spain can be increased to 100%, that of indoor sports arenas to 80%, or aeroplanes can go with all their seats occupied, the cultural auditoriums, cinemas, restaurants or commercial centres continues to be conditioned by capacity and schedule restrictions”.
"These restrictions," said the mayor, "continue to be a drag on the economic reactivation or the recovery of employment, which is now a priority for the battered economy of thousands of families in Santa Cruz, the rest of the island and the Canary Islands."
Bermúdez said that the elimination of restrictions is already happening in other regions of Spain, and the same should be adopted here when each island is at medium or low risk according to the epidemiological reports published by the Ministry of Health.
