The smaller beach at Playa Blanca in southern Lanzarote has reopened to swimmers after being closed for several days due to faecal contamination.
Yaiza Town Hall lifted the temporary swimming ban this morning (Wednesday) after receiving the latest Public Health laboratory results, which confirmed that the water is once again safe for bathing.
The beach had been closed since last Friday as a precaution following concerns over microbiological contamination. The latest tests found that water quality had returned to acceptable levels, allowing the restriction to be lifted.
The local council thanked residents and visitors for their patience during the temporary closure and confirmed that further water samples will be taken over the coming days to continue monitoring water quality.
The closure was caused by a wastewater spill after a blockage in part of the sewer network at Parque del Mediterráneo, which allowed sewage to reach the area around the beach.
This is not the first time the beach has been forced to close. It was also shut in February after Public Health detected elevated levels of intestinal enterococci, a type of bacteria used to assess water quality. In April, nearby Playa Dorada, also in the municipality of Yaiza, was temporarily closed for similar reasons.
