Residents in San Fernando de Maspalomas in Gran Canaria have rallied together to help a group of ducks left without their pond during the current heatwave on the island.
The small pond near Parque Sur was reportedly drained around two weeks ago following complaints about unpleasant smells, leaving around 40 ducks and their ducklings without a permanent source of water.
Rather than leave the birds to struggle in soaring temperatures, local residents have been making daily trips with bottles and containers of water so the ducks can drink and cool off.
One neighbour said she has carried as much as 23 litres of water in a single day, while others, including elderly residents, have also joined in to help, regularly taking five and eight-litre containers to ensure the ducks and their young have enough water to survive.
The community is now appealing to the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Hall to find a permanent solution, either by restoring the pond or relocating the ducks to a safe area with shade and access to water.
In the meantime, it's the kindness of local residents that's keeping the feathered family going through one of the hottest spells of the summer so far.
