A 24-year-old man has been seriously injured after crashing his car into the wall inside a tunnel in Guía de Isora, in the south of Tenerife, during the early hours of yesterday morning (Sunday).

According to reports from the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES), the accident happened at around 12:40am inside the Tejina tunnel on the TF-82 road.

Emergency services were alerted, advising them that the driver was trapped inside the vehicle and required urgent medical assistance.

Firefighters from Tenerife Fire Service needed to free and rescue him from the wreckage before making the area safe for medical personnel to treat him.

Paramedics treated and stabilised the young man at the scene, who was found to have suffered multiple serious injuries and was taken by a medicalised ambulance to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz.

The Guardia Civil managed traffic at the scene and has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, while road maintenance crews cleared the carriageway and removed any hazards.
