La Palma registers an earthquake of magnitude 5, felt in Tenerife

The 24-hour monitoring volcanic surveillance network of the National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recorded a total of 42 earthquakes associated with the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano during the night on the island of La Palma, a dozen of them with magnitudes greater than 3 on the Richter scale.

However, at 7.25am this morning they measured an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 which is the highest magnitude recorded since the seismic activity and eruption began.

This quake was recorded to the southwest of the municipality of Villa de Mazo, at a depth of 35km, and was felt with intensity IV-V on the EMS scale in all the islands of the province, namely, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Tenerife.

The monitoring stations that recorded and felt the tremor in Tenerife were located in: Santiago del Teide, La Guancha, Icod de los Vinos, Guía de Isora, Los Realejos, Candelaria, Güímar, La Orotava, San Miguel de Abona, Granadilla de Abona, Santa Úrsula and Los Silos.

Another earthquake, which occurred at the earlier time of 4.35am, of magnitude 4.1 at a depth of 37 km, also stands out, again in the southwest of Mazo. This tremor was felt with an intensity of III-IV on the EMS scale in almost the entire island of La Palma, as does another of 3.7 magnitude at 7.15am.

Yesterday, 186 earthquakes were recorded in La Palma, the largest of 3.7 magnitude in the southwest of the municipality of Villa de Mazo at 9:38am yesterday morning, with intensity IV on the EMS scale, at a depth of 10km, according to IGN data.
