A strike started yesterday (Saturday), by the workers of Groundforce LPA 2015 UTE who control a large majority of baggage handling at Gran Canaria airport, has left practically all the tourists who arrived on the island without being able to collect their suitcases, and that those who left the island have not been able to take their belongings with them on their flight.
The luggage and belongings of travellers were left on the airport patio until, when this area was saturated, the same was done in the passenger terminal. In addition, many of the flights that were scheduled to leave the island suffered significant delays, while a good number of internal connections were also cancelled.
The union representative of Groundforce said yesterday, that if the company does not reach an agreement with the workers, the strike will continue on Wednesdays and Saturdays for as long as necessary. He claims that their “employment situation has become unsustainable due to the deterioration in working conditions suffered in recent years.”
Passengers luggage was either made available for collection today, or will be delivered to their accommodation, and those returning home have had theirs sent on alternative flights.
It is hoped that an agreement will be made as soon as possible so as not to affect tourism in a negative way, and flight advice is to, if possible, fly on a different day than Wednesday or Saturday to Gran Canaria.
