Reinforcement works on the outer breakwater at the Port of Los Cristianos have entered a new phase, with the first 30-ton concrete blocks now being installed during work that is taking place overnight to reduce any interference with ferry companies, leisure boats, and marine life.

According to Puertos de Tenerife, the project is expected to be completed later this year and represents a total investment of just over €5.3 million, with more than €4.5 million co-funded by EU FEDER funds.

Work carried out in March saw almost all of the rock base (breakwater foundation) put in place. This will support the installation of around 400 concrete blocks, each weighing 30 tonnes.

The blocks have been manufactured in the Granadilla industrial estate and are now being transported gradually to their final position along the breakwater.

Environmental safeguards in place

To reduce the impact on marine life, a special anti-turbidity barrier has been installed. This is designed to limit the spread of sediment in the water, particularly during the most sensitive stages of construction.

The project must also comply with strict environmental conditions. Rock dumping into the sea is restricted between April and July, as this coincides with the breeding season of the protected Angelshark.

Improving port safety

The reinforcement work aims to strengthen repairs made after previous storm damage, improving both the safety and long-term operation of the port.

Los Cristianos is one of Tenerife’s busiest ports, particularly for ferry connections, and the upgrades are expected to provide greater resilience against heavy seas in the future.
