Almost six in ten people living in the Canary Islands are struggling to make ends meet, according to new official figures that also show consumer confidence has fallen to its lowest level in five years.
The latest Consumer Confidence Index for the second quarter of 2026 reveals that 58% of residents are experiencing some degree of financial difficulty as household budgets continue to come under pressure.
According to the figures, 35.6% of adults say they have "some difficulty" making ends meet, while a further 23.2% report having difficulty or great difficulty covering their monthly expenses.
At the other end of the scale, just 9.5% of residents aged 18 and over say they can make ends meet easily or very easily.
The figures also reveal significant differences depending on where people live in the Canary Islands.
North Tenerife residents under the greatest pressure
The north of Tenerife has the highest level of financial difficulty in the Archipelago.
Around 29% of residents there say they have difficulty or great difficulty making ends meet. When those experiencing "some difficulty" are also included, the figure rises to approximately 64%, meaning almost two-thirds of people in the area are feeling financial pressure.
In contrast, the highest percentages of residents who say they are managing their household finances relatively well are found in the metropolitan area of Tenerife, at 42.8%, and the north of Gran Canaria, at 41.9%.
Few expect their finances to improve
The survey also highlights growing pessimism about the months ahead.
Only 15.8% of people across the Canary Islands believe their household finances will improve over the next six months, while more than half (51.1%) expect their financial situation to remain unchanged.
Residents of Lanzarote are the most optimistic about their immediate financial future, with 21.5% expecting their household economic situation to improve.
Once again, the north of Tenerife is at the opposite end of the table. Just 10.4% of residents there believe their household finances will improve in the coming months.
Consumer confidence falls to five-year low
The overall Consumer Confidence Index fell sharply during the second quarter of 2026, dropping to 64.3 points.
That represents a fall of 6.5 points compared with the previous quarter and is the lowest figure recorded in the Canary Islands in the last five years.
Both components used to calculate the index declined. The indicator measuring people's assessment of their current financial situation fell by 6.2 points to 61.6, while the expectations index dropped by 6.8 points to 67.
The figures suggest that financial pressure remains a major concern for households across the islands, with relatively few residents expecting a significant improvement in their finances in the short term.
