Tenerife prepares the Heliodoro Stadium for the Spain and Switzerland match next month

The Tenerife Cabildo is finalising preparations at the Heliodoro Stadium for the highly anticipated UEFA Nations League match between Spain and Switzerland’s national teams, scheduled for Monday November 18th, as excitement is building to welcome the Euros champions who beat England in the final on July 14th to win the tournament.

This marks an exciting milestone for Tenerife, as it will be the island’s first time hosting an international soccer event of this calibre in nearly 30 years.

Yolanda Moliné, Tenerife’s regional sports councillor, emphasised that preparations are entering the final stages. “By game day, we will have a fully functional stadium, suitable for hosting an international match of this level,” she said.

Moliné highlighted the significance of the event, adding that fans are eager to see Spanish national players, including Tenerife natives Pedri and Ayoze, compete on their home turf.

The Tenerife Cabildo, in collaboration with the Royal Spanish Football Federation, the Inter-Island Football Federation, and CD Tenerife, are using extensive resources to adapt various areas of the stadium to meet UEFA's stringent requirements.

Key improvements include an updated press room, renovated locker rooms, and upgraded auxiliary facilities, each aligned to international standards.

A Landmark Year for Tenerife Sports

This event comes just months after Tenerife hosted the Spanish women’s national team, fresh off their World Cup win, highlighting the island's growing role as a venue for major sports events.

The Cabildo is also drafting a master plan for an extensive stadium renovation, ensuring Heliodoro Rodríguez López meets future international standards.

In addition to essential preparations for the UEFA match, the Cabildo is implementing ongoing upgrades. Moliné stated, “The Heliodoro requires constant modernisation. Some elements date back to the 1980s, necessitating a strategic maintenance plan and periodic updates to keep it aligned with international requirements.”

The upcoming Spain-Switzerland game is expected to draw considerable local and international interest, reinforcing Tenerife’s place on the map for high-profile sports events.
