TRAVEL: The most curious and secretive museum in the Canary Islands

Hidden in the Canary Islands is a place as fascinating as it is unusual. A museum that defies conventions and immerses its visitors in an underwater world filled with art and mystery. Imagine diving among sculptures - keep reading as we reveal all the details of this one-of-a-kind museum that seems like the mythical Atlantis.

The Museo Atlántico (Atlantic Museum) is a hidden gem in the waters of Lanzarote. Created by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, this underwater museum is the first and only one of its kind in Europe.

Inaugurated in 2016, it features ten groups of sculptures, including the impressive "Rubicon" and the poignant "Lampedusa Raft." These statues, modelled after local residents, are not only visually striking but also promote the formation of artificial reefs, contributing to marine biodiversity.

Where Is It?

The Atlantic Museum is located just off the coast of Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, at a depth of between 12 and 14 metres. Several excursion companies offer diving trips from the port, if you have a diving certificate that allows you to dive to 12 metres or more, to see the submerged sculptures. Snorkellers can also view the sculptures below from the surface.

If you are visiting Lanzarote, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this unique site, the only underwater museum in Europe.
