A flight travelling from Lanzarote to Dublin had to make an emergency landing yesterday afternoon, Saturday 24th January, after a passenger became seriously unwell mid-flight. The plane diverted to Santiago de Compostela’s Airport in the north of Spain, where it landed safely so the woman could receive urgent medical treatment.

According to reports from air traffic controllers, the incident began while Ryanair flight FR7200 was flying over Portuguese airspace. The cabin crew alerted the pilots after a female passenger showed serious medical symptoms that required immediate attention.

With the passenger’s condition worsening, the pilots requested permission to divert, and Santiago was chosen as the quickest and safest airport to reach. Air traffic controllers in Portugal and Spain worked closely together to guide the aircraft towards Galicia without delay.

Priority approach granted

Controllers cleared the plane for a constant descent and shortened its route so it could land as quickly as possible. The aircraft was given priority access to runway 35, ensuring a fast and smooth arrival.

At the same time, airport staff in Santiago prepared for the emergency. Medical teams and an ambulance were waiting at the runway to take the woman to hospital as soon as the plane landed.

The flight touched down without further problems, and the passenger was transferred straight to medical care.

Air traffic controllers later confirmed that the operation went smoothly and sent their best wishes for the passenger’s recovery.
