Residents continue fight with nightclub with over 30 complaints for noise

The community of owners of the Koka apartments in Playa del Inglés say they are defenceless in the face of serious noise problems generated by a nightclub located in the building’s basement. The administrator of the community, Iban Trilla, confirms that more than 30 official complaints (denuncias) have been made to the police, but no action is being taken.

Trilla has a stack of denuncias that have been filed for loud music, vibrations through the building, and noise in the street by clients of the club at opening and closing times.

He says that the community have also written to the San Bartolomé de Tirajana town hall on November 30th and December 14th of last year, requesting information as to what kind of licence the club has, if any, for opening and closing times.

To date, they have not received an official response from the council, and in fact, the last time they called the police at 4.00am on February 20th to make yet another complaint, they claim they were told to stop making false accusations.

Trilla confirmed that normally, the police come, but on this occasion "they did nothing" he says, because the club's activity continues day after day. In fact, he said that he doesn’t even know if the police have measured the level of the music and/or the noise, because if they had, he guarantees that they would agree with the neighbours' complaints.

In the Koka building, there are 16 flats per floor just above the nightclub, and no one can sleep on nights that the club is open. Several of the apartments are rented out as holiday lets, and Trilla says that many of the people that have stayed in them have ended up leaving due to the impossibility of getting any sleep.

Another problem is the crowds of people who gather at the entrance when the club is open, and after the premises close. Residents claim that they urinate on the pavements, at the reception of the complex, and even in the doorways of the neighbouring premises and businesses.

In short, they want the city council to comply with the regulations regarding the activity of the nightclub, and to increase the police presence in the area on weekends.

In the next few days, they will try to meet with the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana to present the problem to her, since they have not received an official response from the town hall regarding the complaints filed, and the next step will be to go to court.
